cute fawn christmas card

Here's another card using the Kitsch Christmas stamp set by Avery Elle & the O Christmas Tree stamp set by Concord and 9th. I  think they work together so well.

I used the Cable Knit embossing folder from Stampin' Up!'s 2016 Holiday catalogue to emboss the circle. It gives a very deep, textured effect - it really looks like a jumper, I love it!

Lots of cutting done using my new Scan n Cut. I must say, I've moaned a bit about it in previous posts, but it does cut the deer, bells and holly like a dream. You can set it to cut with a broder round the stamped image, but I set it to cut with no border and you can see that it's absolutely bang on the line.

It cut the glitter card quite well - I had to increase the blade depth to 7 as the card is quite dense, and even then it took two repeat cuts to go all the way through, all the way round, but it took less than a minute and i got a crisp and even cut.

A very kitsch Christmas

I do like this fawn stamp. It reminds me of an image painted on a cot from when I was little. I'm not sure if it was a cot that I slept in or if it was a toy cot I had. Or whether it even was mine or I just saw it & coveted it. But anyway, it reminds me of that.

All the stamped images apart from the tree are from the Avery Elle Kitsch Christmas stamp set.

I just love its 60s retro vibe. I coloured all the images with Pro Markers. I'm not an experienced Pro Marker-er, but I think they turned out pretty ok.

The Christmas tree stamp is from the Concord and 9th stamp set O Christmas Tree.
Each of the stamped images was cut using my new Scan n Cut. It was what can best be described as a learning experience!  It loved cutting the images from the Avery Elle set, as they are all nice, clear line drawings. It cut every one of them without an argument.

However, I only had about a 60% success rate with the Christmas tree from the Concord and 9th set. It scanned them all OK, but for some reason it simply would not recognise some of the images when it came to converting them to a cutting file. I did try repositioning those images elsewhere on the cutting mat, and for a few this did the trick, with it recognising them on a 2nd or 3rd scan. But some it simply would not pick up. Having looked at them I can't see why. To my eye they appear the same as the images that cut OK - same ink colour, and a clear, unsmudged impression.  I guess it's to do with the detail on the branches of this stamp - miniscule variations in my stamping that the eye can't detect but the scanner can. I expect that the more I use the Scan n Cut, the more I'll be able to predict which stamps it's likely to "get on with" better. Awkward little bugger.

The label is one the pre-set shapes that comes with the Scan n Cut machine. Why, yes, I *did* use it on yesterday's project too. Why, yes, it *is* the only one I really know how to use at the moment.

I am very pleased with this card though, and the strength of the machine is that I stamped and cut out the individual elements in large batches so I can now go & make multiple copies quite quickly.

I bought both stamp sets from the UK, from Seven Hills Crafts, which has a great selection of stamps and dies from US designers.

Punched Santa Hat

If like me you're making a start on your Christmas cards, the Foxy Friends stamp set (141549) is perfect for making fun, cartoonish cards & here's a way to make a santa hat using the co-ordinating Fox Builder Punch (141470).

As you can see, one of the elements the Fox Builder Punch punches out is his bushy tail.

Slide a strip of red card into the punch where the tail appears & punch (cutting your card to size & positioning it carefully will mean you don't waste card by punching out elements you don't need). Trim about 1/3 off the narrower end of the tail.

Then punch out a small  scalloped circle in white card (I used the retired 3/4" scalloped circle punch by Stampin' Up! - if you don't have one you can use a plain circle punch or just cut it freehand). Take the white punched piece and punch into it again to create a scalloped crescent shape. Trim the edges to fit the red "hat".

I used a small round circle from the Owl Builder Punch to punch out a bobble in white card - look around your punches & dies to see what you've got that will make a small circle, or just cut it freehand.

Assemble the pieces & glue in place et voila - one festive fox!

If you like the Foxy Friends stamp set and coordinating Fox Builder Punch, you can buy them as a bundle (142326) and  save 10%.

Jolly Christmas

I'm keeping it simple with this card. The Jolly Christmas stamp set, with a die cut from Wonderful Wreath framelits. Quick and folksy looking, and easy to mass produce.

Cool-a shakers

The To You and Yours card kit is a fun a quirky kit that creates 18 impressive looking shaker cards in crisp shades of green and red. There's still time to order it and pencil in an evening putting it together with friends over wine and a few nibbles.

You can order a coordinating stamp set to complete it - To You and Yours Too (139819), but you don't have to. I just used elements from stamp sets I already had on hand and I really like the results.

You get full instructions on how to put them together.

All in all, a really cute little kit :)

Vellum window Christmas card

Here's a simple little card that gives a sense of winter's chill - and the cosiness that awaits inside! It's a 4"x3" window card, with the image stamped and coloured on cardstock inside.

Here's what I used (as ever, swap in what you have on hand):
Built for Free Using: My Stampin Blog

And here's what I did:

  1. Cut a piece of red cardstock using the larger of the Project Life Label framelits (or cut a piece to 6"x4"). Score the middle of the 6" side at 3" to form the card base.
  2. Ink up the Dots for Days background stamp with white pigment ink, and carefully stamp what will be the front side of the card. Blast it with a heat gun or set it aside for a little while to dry, so that it doesn't smudge.
  3. Take the 1 3/4" circle punch and punch a hole in the upper middle section of the front of the card. I just eyeball it, but for more precise punching, punch a piece from scrap card & glue it to the place on the card you want the hole to appear. Then position your punch upside down over it (so you can see what you're about to punch) & punch!
  4. For the card inner, select paper or cardstock that will withstand watercolouring without starting to "pill" - Whisper White Shimmer cardstock is perfect. Cut a piece using the smaller Project Life Framelits die (or to a fraction smaller than 4"x3").
  5. Place the liner inside the card, where you want it to appear, & close it. Take a pencil & very lightly trace the outline of the circle you just punched onto the card underneath. Remove the liner from the card.
  6. Ink up the house and tree stamp from Cozy Christmas with Tuxedo Black ink. Carefully hold the stamp over the circle, trying to position it so that the bottom of the house will stamp about 2/3 of the way down the circle. Take a deep breath and stamp! Set with a heat gun or put aside to dry for a little while. Once dry, take a rubber and lightly rub out your pencil lines.
  7. To colour in, scribble the Pool Party marker onto a plastic surface & pick up a little colour with the Aqua Marker (or a paint brush). Blend the colour lightly, so that it's darker at the top of the sky and lighter towards the house. Colour the trees and the window with the other two inks. Allow to dry.
  8. Take some Dazzling Details gitter glue and dot it anywhere you want the snow to shimmer - the roof, some of the boughs, along the ground. Set aside to dry. Once dry, attach the liner to the inside of the card with glue or double sided tape, so that the house appears through the window.
  9. To decorate the window, punch out a piece of vellum with the 2 3/8" scallop punch. Dot the vellum with a few dots of glitter glue if wanted, or you could stamp tiny snowflakes and emboss with the Iridescent Ice embossing powder.
  10. Use the 1 3/4" circle punch to punch a piece out of the blue paper from the Home for the Holidays paper pack. Position the 2 3/8" scallop punch over the hole in the paper you just punched and punch again - this will give you a scalloped frame.
  11. Trace a thin line of glue round the back side of the outer edge of the scalloped vellum & stick it to the front of the card, so it covers the punched hole evenly. Do the same for the scalloped frame, line up and stick over the vellum, so that it masks the scalloped edges and the sides of the red punched hole are not visible.
  12. Stamp Have a Cozy Christmas on white card. Punch out with the Word Window punch. Cut a strip of red card that is a fraction wider &  longer than the Word Window punched piece. Round the corners with scissors or a corner rounder and mount the stamped sentiment onto it. Mount onto the front of the card & you're done!
  13. (If you have an envelope punch board you can make an envelope using the 6th set of measurements & a 6"x6" piece of paper).

Quick class card

My card class last night featured the cute and versatile Festival of Trees stamp set & punch. We made 5 very different cards.

I thought I'd share a quick video about my favourite. If you're panicking about not having made your Christmas cards yet, you could bang out multiple copies of this in no time. The base is cut using the Project Life large framelit die and the shapes are all punched out. The only thing that takes any real time is waiting for the glitter glue to dry. Plus, it's a titchy card so it won't use up too much of your precious supplies! The finished card is 3x4" and you can make an envelope for it using the envelope punch board with a 6x6 sheet of paper.

If you're in the Stockport area & fancy crafting with me I'll be running a regular monthly class in the new year. I'll post a class schedule shortly. In the meantime, keep in touch with me via my Facebook page.

Here's what I used!

Pop up White Christmas

Love me my pop up cards & the White Christmas stamp set is perfect for creating little scenes.

I used the house from the Life's Adventures stamp set, which is a hostess set, but this card would work equally well with the Holiday Home stamp set in the Autumn/Winter catalogue. I've put details of both below. (Incidentally, the Apothecary Accents Framelits & coordinating paper piercing template I used on the sentiment are both on sale in this weeks Weekly Deals!)

I made the starry sky using a clear emboss resist technique. I pressed the Versamark ink pad through the the star mask  then embossed with clear embossing powder. Then I sponged Pacific Point ink over the top, & gave the card a quick swipe with a baby wipe to remove the ink from the stars.

With practice, pop up cards are pretty easy. You just need to get a feel for where to make the cuts at the back of your card & how different length cuts  create perspective.

Here, my white base card measures 4 1/2"  (11.5cm) wide, & the cuts are at 1 5/8" & 2 6/8" (4.2 cm & 7.2cm). I put a stepped cut into the second cut, to pop the car in front of the tree.
